An Explanation of My Photograph

Fri Jun 2, 2006, 1:22 PM
To those who are wondering about my photography, because I explain very little in the description of the images...

All of my photographs are taken through reaction. I don't plan to seek out an image and capture it. Part of my photography...and a significant part at that....is the experience. I carry my camera with me a lot, and react to things that I find beautiful. Of the photographs posted on this site, the only one that had any degree of predetermined though is 'mike and mary'.

I use a Kodak 35 mm fully manual camera from the 1970's for all of my photography. I use no zoom. I develop all of the film in the darkroom, and make all of the prints as well. Method is very important to my art. The raw, somewhat grainy, and often unrefined images that you see are the direct result of the process. My photographs are about Americana...the images and experiences America holds.

I didn't read your journal before I left a comment on "dc". I'm even more impressed that your using a camera from the 70's. There are so many wanna be photograhers (like me) who rely on digital cameras and photoshops to make eye candy. But you are the real deal! Like I said before I'm good at making only eye candy. But too much candy is bad for you and has nothing of nutritional value whatsoever. Then are real photographers like you who relies on your own skill to a photo into a real delicacy.

You are the bee's knee sir!

Thanks, Jim. But do not think that somehow manual photography is of more value than digital. The art world has a place for digital photography....and there are tons of benefits. Digital works are very different than manual...one isnt better than the other...they are just different. I love digital photography very much and admire it. You have a genuine, authentic voice in your work...it isnt 'fake'...like a lot of the garbage out there. THAT...is a talent in and of itself.
